The legendary Bjarke Ingels; Brain behind Bjarke Ingels Group

Architecture and design stand tall among the societal elements whose value remain truly timeless. You see, architecture is a continuous concept that is increasingly changing as new designs come up overnight. Architects play some of the biggest roles when it comes to the built environment. Making it in this sector requires a bit more than just passion and knowledge. In Denmark, modern architectural designs have been well blended with the medieval structures in a manner that creates such a mosaic of structures. The story of architecture in Denmark can’t ever be complete without the mention of Bjarke Ingel who founded Bjarke Ingels Group. We here dissect his achievements and assess his contribution in the field of construction engineering.

You have to stand out! And that’s exactly what Bjarke Ingels has managed to do. Not only does he focus on sustainable building design but also on connecting with people. Many have seen his efforts as going beyond the conventional architect. Today, he is an inspiration to many upcoming and aspiring architects worldwide. His idealistic approach to architecture has earned him a reputation in the architectural field that most architects only dream of.

Bjarke Ingels Background

Bjarke Ingels was born in Copenhagen and proceeded to study architecture as he was curious about illustration. What started out as a way to perfect his drawing skills soon turned into a complete love for the field. Later, he set out to work alongside Rem Koolhaas at OMA (Office for Metropolitan Architecture) for several years.

However, in 2001, he decided to return to his hometown. It’s when he co-founded PLOT with his colleague Julien de Smedt. It wasn’t long before it attained international recognition. Six or five years later, they parted ways and  he started BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group). He continued to collaborate with his old partners though. BIG focuses on promoting cultural exchange and diverse workspaces.

Bjarke Ingel isn’t the only lone important figure standing out from Denmark. We also have Selina Juul whose role in championing for reduction in food waste has placed her on the global stage.

Bjarke Ingels Vision for the Future

Bjarke Ingels draws inspiration for most of his work from his early life in Copenhagen. His vision for the future is not only optimistic but highlights an idealistic society. Key architectural concepts such as urbanism characterize most of his work. What sets him apart from other architects is that he views architecture not as an isolated idea but as society.

A quick exploration of his projects and one can’t miss the blend of art, architecture, urbanism and nature.  A few popular examples include the VM Houses and Battersea Power Station Malaysia Square. These projects are also characterized by sustainable and green building design solutions.

Most of his projects are also based on meeting the existing needs and lifestyle by solving various challenges. Another interesting fact about his projects is that they promote sustainability while also considering a thriving social life. This is evident from his work on the Amager Bakke Waste-to-energy Power Plant in Copenhagen.

Creating a Balance between the Utopian and Realism in Architecture

One thing that many famous architects have in common is focusing on either the realistic or the utopian. However, Bjarke Ingels has created a unique profile by creating a balance between the two. According to him, this is the only way to get the society to attain its best existence.

This, together with his combination of sustainability, economics and ecology has been enough to help him stand out. On the Mountain Dwellings project at Copenhagen, he managed to bring together all three.

Popularity with the Younger Generations

One fact that has remained true recently is that you can only catch the attention of younger generations through technology. Thus, it comes as no surprise that many young people can relate with Ingels. He has fully embraced technology and it’s reflected in his projects. Technology has helped him to develop monumental sustainable building designs.

He is also a favourite of the young people because of his open-mindedness when it comes to projects. Ingel has an attitude that many have considered capitalistic though he has described as resilience. This legendary architect has taken his position as a renowned architect to promote change and stimulate social interaction. In many cases he has indicated that he goes above and beyond the client’s brief. His goal is to develop multi-purpose designs and provide lively spaces.  He also has a whimsical personality and loves science fiction and graphic design. These are popular concepts among the young generation.

Multitasking

Ingels’s architectural style is what many would call killing two birds with one stone. This is illustrated in his manifesto Yes is more. He also explained his love for illustration and why it’s so important for him to stand to his values.  He uses graphics to better explain his concepts to the public and his clients.

However, like other creatives out there, Ingel has been criticized by many in the industry and beyond. Some professionals have described him as radical and having an unconventional way of thinking. According to them, these two things should not be included in any architectural practice.  However, he has managed to ignore his critics and maintains his personality and ideas in all his projects.

This has forced many to acknowledge that he is not only ethical, but also has strong values and unmatched energy. He continues to fight for an ideal quality of life for society through sustainable architecture. He is also loved by many environmentalists because of his sensitivity to the environment.
